The majority of the staff are graduates of Gesher and love coming to camp as much as the campers. All counselors are a minimum of 18 years of age and grade 12 graduates. Staff members undergo training for 10 days prior to the first session of each summer which includes:
- First-aid and CPR
- Abuse Prevention and Child Protection
- Behaviour Management
We strive to set an example for the campers by living according to the values we teach. Like the campers, the staff work co-operatively and contributes a portion of their summer’s salary towards group events and recreation. The majority of our counselors have embedded the values we teach from their years as campers. They are reflected in the lifestyles of counselors year-round, especially in the social hubs that form in Toronto, Montreal, Kingston, Guelph and elsewhere. The staff works to ensure that all campers and counselors feel safe, comfortable, and happy within the camp environment.
Most of our staff are also active in Jewish organizations outside of Camp Gesher and Habonim Dror helping to further develop our Jewish educational practices. Our staff can often be found teaching in Hebrew schools and after-school programs. Some of our staff have attended Jewish schools as well furthering their experience with learning and delivering Jewish education. As a camp, we attend the Foundation for Jewish Camp’s Cornerstone program to further our staff’s abilities to deliver Jewish programming. We run multiple seminars for our staff during the non-summer months for them to boost their skills. We also bring staff from Israel every summer to further our connection to Israel and helping our campers create their own personalized connection to Israel and their Jewish identity.
Our staff ensures the safety and well-being of our campers. We provide a 3:1 ratio of staff to counselors. This allows us to maintain our great supervision record. We also have counselors sleeping in the cabins with our campers to ensure any middle of the night emergencies can be dealt with quickly and effectively. Counselors are selected and placed in cabins with their skill level with particular age groups kept in mind. We place our counselors with age groups they have the most experience with ensuring they have the skills necessary to work with that particular age group.
